Pronounced off pee-st, Off-Piste Photography got it's name while I was skiing in Europe.  It means off trail, off the beaten path, out of bounds, etc......And refers to the type of images displayed on this site.  No Roadside Photography is allowed unless it is very unique because I believe anybody could take the same picture.  My  photography  represents a lifestyle, as I am not only taking pictures but am also experiencing an aspect of life that takes me to these places, whether it is skiing, mountaineering, surfing, or just camping.
I learned photography on my own.  Living in Alaska and Hawaii, I had plenty of time to read many books and learn how to work my cameras.  I am a visual and hands on person.  I am constantly learning, as I believe this is a never-ending process. I have used my gear in many different types of environments, including really wet and extreme cold conditions, where many of these images come from.  My cameras have become an essential part of my packs.  I shoot digital as well as 35mm color saturated slide film.
I try to provide a unique perspective that is rarely seen by only those who venture into the back-country or off the beaten path. I am infatuated with the unseen and am obsessed with a feeling of solitude and remote or un-tracked vistas. It is for this reason that many of these photos will never be produced by another photographer.
As the Southwest guru Edward Abbey put it, "You can't see anything from a car; you've got to get out of the goddamned contraption and walk, better yet crawl, on hands and knees, over the sandstone and through the thornbush and cactus.  When traces of blood begin to mark your path, you'll see something, maybe."  And this is my philosophy towards outdoor photography and one of the reasons I named it Off-Piste Photography.
